Ann Pickett is an abstract expressionist painter based in Washington DC. Painting in acrylic my work consists of layers of paint, mark-making, and sometimes collage all applied by hand, brush, or with a variety of tools and mediums: caran d’ache, charcoal, graphite. Vibrant color, strong composition, and bold, gestural lines are at the core of each piece.
I paint, simply, because I love to paint. I start with the familiar, inspired by figure, still life, or landscape but work spontaneously, moving where the paint takes me. I work in the abstract because of the freedom it gives, the many endless possibilities. Realism is never my focus, rather a suggestion.
