‘HUMAN’
Works by Artist Hyun Jung Kim
“I encountered the portrait of Flora who was an enslaved person in 1796 at the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery. This portrait depicts Flora, the object of sale on the bill of sale, without any detail, just a brown paper cut-out of her silhouette. In the way of expressing the portrait, I read the rough and low attitude of dealing with a human named Flora and I decided to remake her portrait with the respect that a human being deserves.” - HJKim
